Little Red Riding Hood

So I took an accidental hiatus. I just needed to reset myself, and get to where I was feeling good enough to get in front of the camera again. But then I found these photos from before all the snow, and decided that they needed to be posted.

I’m a huge fan of fairy tales, and found this coat in the back of my closet when getting dressed and immediately thought of little red riding hood. I’m actually pretty sure I was heading off to my parents house, so that’s even better. I can’t for the life of me remember why I stopped wearing it because it’s about 7 years old and I haven’t worn it in about 4 years.

I absolutely adore these photos. It’s one of the perks of being married to a guy who knows his way around a camera.

Also I kinda really miss the days when it was warm enough to be outside, let alone take photos like this.

I can’t recall where I first heard about this book, but I bought it over a year ago and was extremely excited to get it.

I’m pretty sure it was recommended by a T.V. show or Actress I was obsessed with at the time, or something like that. My whole entire life, I have adored Barbie, but I hear constantly everything that it is meant to be negative about her. With the Subtitle of this book being “A Doll’s History and Her Impact On Us” I felt that it was absolutely a must read for me. I decided that for this weeks outfit, I’d do my best impression of Barbie, and got all dressed up to take photos. I don’t normally just dress up to take photos, usually I wear whatever I’m wearing in the post all day, but getting all done up just for the sake of being photographed was fun. Details will be at the end of the post.Fashion and Happy Things! Book Review: The Good, The Bad and The Barbie Fashion and Happy Things! Book Review: The Good, The Bad and The Barbie

This gives not just the history of Barbra “Barbie” Millicent Roberts, but also the history of her creator Ruth Handler. It talks of her early life growing up, who she fell in love with and how a girl who never cared about dolls created the most iconic doll ever.

The reason she created Barbie, named after her daughter, is simple. Girls want to play with a doll that looks like a grown up. You could easily stop here at this statement and say “Okay, now I don’t need to read this book.” But you’d be wrong. You’d miss out on seeing the different Barbie’s through the years and how she has affected many girls lives in both positive an negative ways.

This got me thinking, how did Barbie affect me? I remember the last Barbie I ever bought, was a Teacher Barbie, my parents found her at Goodwill, she was new in packaging, she came with 2 students, desks and a chalk board, and she was cheap only $5. I was 9 years old and I loved that Barbie to death. I had several other Barbie’s. My first one was bought at an old fashioned General store that had wood floors. I went in with my Grandmother and because I was quiet I got to pick out a toy. I chose Barbie. She was simple, and the cheap version, a kind of knock off of the original, but not really a knockoff since she was produced by Mattel. I adored her. She had such great hair and pretty makeup. I was given dresses and shoes and my fashion obsession began. I loved to dress Barbie up and go on adventures. My Barbies were all actresses because they were always pretending to be someone else. They were Nancy Drew and Paula Abdul and Kelly from Saved By The Bell. Once when I lost my Ken I dressed another Barbie up in his clothes to carry on acting out the scenes.

But Barbie didn’t just spark my fashion obsession as a child, she also bonded me with my one of my Aunts. I remember my Aunt Heather had the coolest Barbies when I was little. She had a couple of the Barbies from the Barbies and the Rockers Series. Every time I came over I’m sure I begged to play with her Barbies, but after I put one in chicken soup (she was sick!) I was never allowed to unsupervised. We put on concerts, had weddings, ran businesses, and did everything we could possibly dream of. I always felt so cool playing with Heather, because she was 7 years older than me. By the time she out grew playing Barbies with her niece, I had mostly outgrown Barbies. But I’ve never outgrown her completely.

Right from Barbie’s beginnings mother’s were worried about how the doll would effect their daughter’s self esteem. Barbie even has a syndrome named after her. I have never had any issues with Barbie, she was always just another toy to me. She represented what I wanted when I grew up, a busy girl with a bursting closet and tons of shoes. It never got more complex than that for me.

No matter your thoughts on Barbie, I can’t recommend this book to you enough.

Stylish Sundays Skater Skirt or The Nicest Day Ever

I’m sure you remember I went shopping at H&M for some things to cover my ass awhile ago, and I promised each item would definitely be featured in an outfit post. Today’s item is the Skater Skirt. Can I just say I’m completely in love with this skirt? This may be my absolute favorite skirt I’ve ever owned. It’s a bit weighty, but it’s completely stretchy and the weightiness of it makes it hang perfectly. This outfit was really simple, but I felt great in it, and that’s really what matters most about what you’re wearing.

Everything I’m wearing is actually from H&M except for my Jewelry. The Pink Tee and Floral Shoes are from last year.

I’m a bit sad that I didn’t get a good shot of my bracelet, but it’s a Tiffany’s Return To Tiffany’s Heart Toggle Bracelet that T gave me for my 23 or 24th Birthday. The Key necklace was a present from O that same year.

We didn’t really do much of anything this day, it was pretty lazy. I think at most I might have run to the store, and I’m pretty sure we had takeout for dinner, but I couldn’t tell you what it was. I do remember feeling great and it just generally being a really nice day that day.

Cover Your Ass or H&M Haul

Since it’s Summer now it’s officially hot here in Indiana. I don’t really like hot weather clothes, not because I’m modest, but because I much prefer boots and tights and skinnies and oversize sweaters. But it got really hot last year and I only had 2 or 3 pairs of shorts no skirts and no casual dresses so I was completely unprepared, and thought I might die of heatstroke.

Fashion and Happy Things! Cover Your Ass or H&M Haul

This year I decided I should be at least a bit more prepared so I of course went to H&M’s Summer Sale.
I picked up a blue midwaisted skater skirt, well that’s how it seems to sit on me. The material is very nice, a bit heavy, but since it’s a skirt that’s fine. I think I’ll be able to wear this well into the fall. I also picked up a pair of light tan twill shorts, that fit me really well. Which is great because the other twill shorts I tried on in the same size just different color didn’t fit me at all. Then I bought two of the same style of short, just different color/pattern. I got them in Black and in sort of a reptile print. I absolutely love these shorts and I wish I’d bought them in all 5 of the styles that they had. I’ve figured out with H&M if you love a style of something buy multiples right them because they’ll be gone quick. Surprisingly nothing I bought was on sale. Even more surprising was that all the bottoms I bought were $12.95. I also picked up a really cute hat for $9.95.

Then from not H&M (read as Sephora, apparently I need to branch out where I shop at) I picked up a Nails Inc Polish in Notting Hill Gate, which is a neon pink, and the Kate Somerville Clearing Mask.

I’m really excited for the skirt, I have skirts that I bought to wear in the fall and winter, but I didn’t wear them as much as I should have, and I only got one of them photographed for the blog. This skirt will definitely be appearing on the blog, and soon. Maybe this Sunday? Maybe next? I don’t know because I haven’t worn it outside of the dressing room yet, but it is lovely.

Spending Ban Fail! or Collective Haul… Again

So I know I was on a spending ban, and I was only to buy necessities. And I did mostly only purchase necessities. But then there was nail polish and I couldn’t help it.

Fashion and Happy Things! Spending Ban Fail! or Collective Haul... Again

So first I placed an order to Murad and ordered another Acne Kit, this time without the mattifying lotion because I hated it. This kit contains a face wash, exfoliating gel, skin perfecting moisturizer, Clarifying mask and acne spot treatment.  I also ordered the Pomegranate Exfoliating Mask.

Then from Macy’s I ordered the Sheseido Sun Proctection foundation in SP10, which doesn’t match me so I’ll be returning this weekend, and a Lancôme Nail Polish in Rose Macroon.

From a few different trips to Sephora I picked up the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, Illamasqua Mottle Nail Polish, Nails INC Stratford Mirror Metallic Polish, Nails INC Kensington Caviar Nail Base and Kensington Caviar 45 Second Top Coat. Pictured, but shouldn’t be because it was in a previous haul and I forgot, Illamasqua Speckle Nail Varnish.

Then I needed new Shampoo, you’ll find out why in an upcoming post, but I went to ULTA and got a new Brush and Ouidad PlayCurl Shampoo and Conditioner. It smells amazing and I love it so very much.

I will of course be doing reviews on all of these items, and when I get around to it the polishes will be on the proper pinterest boards.

The only things I didn’t need that are pictured are the nail polishes, and I just couldn’t help myself. Just ask my Aunt, she went with me to the VIB Beauty Insider Event where I bought Stratford and she witnessed me freaking out over the fact that they had it.  It’s an addiction, and if I’m not careful I’m going to find those My Strange Addiction people knocking on my door.
