Tea, Books, and a little Chatter

This is a post to say there will be no Stylish Sundays post tomorrow. It basically boils down to I’m too sick for real clothing, and I don’t want to put up another post of me in pajamas or lounge wear. Really there’s already too much of that on the internet already, and there will be more in the future, just not today.

So instead this is how my evening is shaping up, I have my ForLife Teapot filled with Tazo Wild Sweet Orange Tea, my favorite Anthropologie tea cup, and the last book in the Laura Childs Scrapbooking series, and the first in her Tea Shop Mystery series. Add in the puffs plus lotion tissues, Don’t Trust The B In Apt 23 on Netflix, and my favorite blanket and it’s shaping up to be a nice evening. And I’m hoping to eat proper food for dinner tonight because I haven’t been able to have anything other than toast since the day before yesterday.

So far I’ve really adored the Laura Childs Scrapbooking Mystery series. They’ve all been really fun quick reads. I love the characters and that it’s set in the Big Easy. It’s a great combo of this can’t possibly be real life and completely plausible. They’re the perfect quick easy read for when you’re sick.

How’s you weekend shaping up? And what are your favorite things to read when you’re sick?

Me: Right Now

If you know me, then you know I spend a lot of time sick. Most of the time I can fake it and put on real clothing and makeup and function like a grown up. Because at 27 with a 7 year old who even ill has their button stuck on go that’s what you do.

But then there’s days like today where I’m texting everyone because unless I’m in the process of swallowing something warm, it feels like there’s a torture device from a horror movie rotating in my throat. I feel feverish and cranky and my first thought on waking up was how much dayquil can you drink before you o’d?

So I pulled on my favorite Victoria’s Secret Leggings, grabbed my favorite Gilly Hicks hoodie and scraped my hair into a ponytail with an Emi-Jay Hair tie. Skipped the makeup because my face is a bit swollen and I don’t even want to touch it (those of you with sinus issues totally get this one) and when I got a bit cold threw on my navy blue Bearpaw boots.

I adore my Jack Skellington mug that my husband got me a few days ago when I was massively stressed out over our son’s Halloween costume. It was the perfect way to remind me that Halloween is my favorite Holiday.

Detail shot on the hoodie. I bought this last year during a Gilly Hicks sale along with another one, and I definitely have plans to get more. Victoria’s secret may do the best leggings, but Gilly Hicks has them beat on cozy hoodies.

My boots are Navy blue Bearpaw boots that my husband gave me for Christmas a couple years ago. I got these instead of Uggs because I hadn’t decided yet if I wanted to spend that much on a pair of boots that I probably won’t wear out of the house all that often. However I’m full on in love with the ones that have bows on them so I’ll probably be asking for a pair in the Classic Chestnut color for Valentines day.

Me Right Now

If you’re a fan of this look for laying around your house sick then then I made a wishboard of the same or similar items that are available now. Just being this cozy and surrounding myself with all of my favorite things has made me feel so much better.

Stylish Sundays: Sick Day Essentials

Or I’ve got the Flu

So today’s post is going to be different. I have the flu, and was absolutely not up to getting all dressed up to take photos. So rather than skip it, I’ve decided to show you guys what at typical sick day looks like for me. I know I did a post on how to have a good sick day and I thought I’d show you it in practice, because I’m going to be sick for at least a couple weeks.

On my face: photoshop. I was too sick for makeup so my husband kindly edited out my skin issues as he always does. Someday I’ll be brave enough to post a barefaced unedited phot, but not today.
My hair: that twist thing I do with my bangs when I decide I hate them.
What I’m wearing: Gilly Hicks Hoodie. Not pictured: H&M Striped Tank, Victoria’s Secret Star Print Pajama Pants that were a gift from Miss Cannady last Christmas.

Before I get into my essentials I’d like to talk about how weird it is to have the flu in August. I keep forgetting that its not cold outside, and my brain keeps thinking I smell Fall. And that brain trick keeps making me want coffee and sweaters and boots even more. I also really want to watch It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and all my Halloween Movies.

Now on to my Essentials, these are the things that I must have in reach when I’m sick.

fashionandhappythings-9954

I have a book, currently I’m reading Cemetery Girl, I’m only a few pages in because I keep falling asleep which has more to do with my cough medicine and nothing to do with the book, but I like it so far. Full review next week. Cough Drops, I like the sugar free Halls ones, they work for me. Find ones that work for you and stock up, I currently have 3 bags in different flavors. I have the T.V. Remote, my iPhone and iPad. Entertainment that you don’t have to focus on is super important. I get so bored laying on the couch, currently I’m killing it in the My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, if I’m feeling up to it later, I might decide to replay Costume Quest on Xbox. Water, I have mine in this bright tumbler with fun colored straw that I got from my local Hallmark store, because right now my throat hurts so bad I don’t want to drink anything. It’s a lot easier to force myself to drink if the cup is cute. And finally Puffs Plus Lotion Tissues, because a nose in need, deserves Puffs indeed. Am I the only one that loves those Puffs commercials they air in the fall and winter? I only use the Plus Lotion, because when I’m sick I have to blow my nose a lot and I quickly get that raw soreness around my nose. Not Pictured, but also super helpful is my Liz Earle Superbalm. I adore this stuff when I’m sick and I will be reordering it when I run out. Also not pictured insane amounts of Hand Sanitizer. I love the bath and body works ones and keep a couple in the drawer in my side table.

My final essential:

fashionandhappythings-9958

Howl. A cuddly puppy that keeps bringing me his Speider (watch Megamind) to make me feel better. When I had a fever yesterday he spent most of the day sleeping with me on the couch. Today there’s been lots of cuddles and puppy kisses. Also lots of stolen tissues. He sure loves to tear them up on the carpet.

Since I have the flu and will be sick for a while, what are your must haves when your sick? Also any App recommendations?

Blogmas Day 13: Soup and a Ramble

I’ve been really sick for the past few days with various symptoms that have made me feel generally yucky, but today it’s culminated into a full on cold. So I’ve mostly spent the day drifting in and out of sleep on my couch and reading Aunt Dimity books on my nook. Now I’m curled up in my favorite pink blanket, and about to have my favorite soup.

That soup is Campbell’s 100% Natural New England Style Beef Pot Roast. That’s an exceptionally long name for soup, but it’s my absolute favorite. Whenever it’s in stock I buy as many cans of it as I can to keep stocked up on it.  I’m also pretty found of that bowl, it sort of makes me exceptionally happy. A bit silly yes, but when you’re sick it’s the little things. And  yes that is sitting on a Glossybox box, I’ve had the glossybox I won for a while and haven’t gotten around to taking pictures and doing a review on it yet. I will soon, hopefully.

I promised I’d show you my tea pot and tea cups, I was going to wait until I had more tea cups, but due to Christmas I’m on a bit of a spending ban and it’ll be a while before I buy another. I really do love my little blue tea pot, it makes me super happy and I feel cozy whenever I have a pot of tea brewed.

As I mentioned before the cups are from Anthropologie and the Tea Pot is made by a company called For Life. I usually drink some mixture of Early Grey Creme, Scarlett Cloud or Citrus Lavender Sage from Teavana. The book is also from Anthropologie, I bought it around Valentines Day last year. I thought it looked really cute and it matches the theme of that shelf.

There were flurries the other night, but none of it stuck so we still don’t have any actual snow.  Since it was errands night, I did get to see the “hyper drive” snow. I didn’t have any gloves with me and it was really cold so I bought these.

I was a bit inspired by Zoella’s panda mittens when I purchased these, but mostly because my nickname is ManaBear. I’m kinda in love with them because they’re super snuggly and match everything. The tip of the thumb flips back so I can still use my phone. Also I’ve been running around all day with them on making  horrible “with my bear hands” jokes. My nails are not black by the way, I have on one coat of Essie’s Midnight Cami and a coat of Deborah Lippmann’s Across The Universe. Fun Fact: when I showed Across The Universe to my Husband he said I had to buy it because it had Universe in the title and it looked like space. He’s a big fan of space and universe-y things.

It’s Taylor Swift’s birthday today and they’re releasing the video for I knew you were trouble on MTV this afternoon so I’m sorta really excited about that. I hop I’m awake for it.

Well that’s about it for today, my soup should be cool enough to eat now, so I’m going to eat that and maybe have another nap.

How to have a nice cozy sick day

I decided to write this post because I seem to be coming down with a cold. I’ve got that foggy feeling in my brain, and a sore throat. I actually don’t mind being sick. This is probably because I spend most of my time sick. I have a low immune system, and asthma and allergies. So I’ve had to learn to enjoy myself while feeling poorly or I’d spend all my time in a poor state of mind. I’m sick so often I have it down to a science people. Seriously, it may not be the best day ever, but it’s not exactly horrible either. Of course, there are exceptions when your extremely, need a doctor type, sick, you’re not going to have a good day, but if you’re to sick for work or school, but not sick enough for a doctor, this is a pretty decent way to spend your day.

  • First of all you’ll need a favorite blanket, it could be a cuddly throw you knit yourself, or bought (V.S. Pink usually has some cute ones), or whatever blanket you have that is the schnuggliest. You want to stay warm when your sick and it’s better if your blanket makes you really happy. I have one that I use only when I’m sick, which I think makes it more special.
  • You’ll need your schnuggliest, coziest, cutest sweats or pajamas. Just because you’re ill doesn’t mean your loungewear can’t be adorable, the better you look, the better you feel, and if you’re feeling cute in your sweats, with your hair in a top knot or alice band, you’ll feel better about yourself. And there is plenty of extremely comfortable adorable loungewear/pajamas out there. I recommend Gilly Hicks for that
  • Next you’ll need a cute cup to drink water or ginger ale from. Staying hydrated is really important when your sick and it definitely helps if you’re using a super cute tumbler cup. Mine is a polka dot one from Hallmark, but I really want to get one of the Elle and Blair ones from Glitzy Glam. I love the monogramming and they’re really cute, especially the polka dot ones, and the stripey straws you can buy to go with them instead of the plain clear straw.
  • I also have a special soup bowl, it’s red and shaped like an over-sized mug and it says soup all the way around it. This isn’t necessary, but you’re favorite soup is, chicken soup is best but really whatever soup is your favorite will do.
  • You’re also going to need a good movie or a few of them. My personal sick day favorites are Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Easy A. Those are all movies I’ve seen so many times that I can watch them while drifting in and out of sleep and I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything.
  • I’m also really fond of having a candle burning, usually I can’t smell it so I pick a cheap one that doesn’t have much scent anyways so I don’t feel like I’m wasting it, but still the burning candle makes me feel cozier.
  • Before you settle in you’ll need to make sure you have your cup filled to the brim, and you have tissues (I prefer puffs plus lotion because a nose in need deserves puffs indeed), chapstick, lotion, hand sanitizer (bath and body works do the best ones), and a small trashcan or bag so you don’t have to keep getting up to throw away your tissues.
  • Finally you’ll need an activity, I like to knit, usually something that I don’t need a pattern for. If you knit you know what I mean, there are things like a simple plan scarf you don’t need a pattern for because you’ve done the stitches so many times your hands just seem to know what to do. I also like to read, and listen to music. You want an activity that you enjoy, but one that if you fall asleep doing it or need to leave as it is so you can go to sleep it won’t be ruined.
  • Then you just need to snuggle into your favorite spot, whether it’s a large arm chair, the sofa, or your own bed and you’re set.

Obviously, I vary how I spend the day each time I’m sick, since I’m usually ill for at least a week, but this is mostly what I do. In the winter, if I’m feeling especially poorly I’ll add in a cute schnuggly scarf and mittens, even sometimes a hat, and the pajama’s of boots (UGGS), and unless it’s summer or really hot outside, I bundle myself like that if I have to go to the doctor. The more frivolous you are with your routine, the happier you’ll be. I also have a pillow pet, a pink unicorn that I schnuggle with on especially yucky days.
