Book Review: Gone Girl

Today’s review is on Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

Fashion and Happy Things! Book Review: Gone Girl

Which to be honest is kinda a saved the best for last. I can totally see why they’re making Gone Girl into a movie. Sharp Objects may have been my favorite, but Gone Girl is so good too.

It’s Amy and Nicks 5th wedding anniversary when Amy goes missing. Things look bad for Nick as evidence adds up and things get found out. Can Nick find out what happened before he ends up in jail?

This book was so good. It’s definitely a thriller and is going to make an amazing movie. I can’t wait to see it. I definitely wasn’t expecting the second half of this book at all. What happened to Amy is so just messed up. I really recommend this book and I definitely recommend that you read the book before you go see the movie. I’m purposefully keeping this review short so I don’t accidentally reveal anything that happens.

Last Minute Gift Guide

Sometimes things sneak up on you, Valentines Day is one week away, have you gotten a present for your sweetie yet? If not its cool, I have plenty of ideas for you.

First of all if you can’t get to the store then your best friend is speedy shipping. If you’ve got Amazon Prime which is free two day shipping, or Zappos VIP which is free one day shipping then you’ve got it made. You can just order your sweeties gift and call it a day. However, if you don’t have either of those services then you need to come up with something else.

If you completely blanked on the day and didn’t make a reservation for anywhere then I recommend your own version of a fancy dinner. Set up a picnic in your living room. Whether you make the simplest of finger foods or you’re talented in the kitchen doesn’t matter. What does matter is the effort you put into the ambiance. Lay a nice fresh from the dryer throw blanket out toss on some throw pillows and light the room with frameless candles. I’d add in one scented actual candle in your loves favorite scent. If you’re stopping here then for the present you could add in either a gift basket of their favorite treats, or a gift certificate out to dinner together.

You could easily do the above date as is, or if you share a love of music, then play your favorite music and for the gift, a gift certificate for your favorite music shop or iTunes would be sweet. But if you go the gift card route then you need to go one step up, and also add a note saying you’ll make a day of it together.

If you’re huge movie fans then picking up a new movie you’ve wanted to see or an old favorite the two of you know line by line is perfect. It doesn’t have to be romantic, the TV universe’s coolest couple, Marshall and Lily from How I Met Your Mother, watch Predator every Valentines Day. If you choose a new movie then wrap it up and give it to them as the gift at the beginning of the night. If its an old favorite, then they probably own it, so that won’t work unless its a special edition. In that case a movie shopping date or Theater gift certificate that covers both of you is especially sweet.

If you’ve made reservations then skip all of the above and go straight to the gift certificate bit. A gift certificate will work for whatever your love is into. A Sephora card for the makeup obsessed, Michael’s if they’re an artiste. If they’re into fixing up their car then a gift card to Advance Auto, if they’re the sort of person whose house is covered in books the Barnes and Noble or even better their favorite indie shop or if you know they’re saving for something specific then you can give then a gift card to save for that. The most important thing to making the gift card work is a promise of your time to go with. That way it’s less “Hey I forgot” and more ” I want to spend more time with you”.

Valentines Day is for showing your love you care, and taking the time to show them that. Whether your plans are low key, or crazy extravagant doesn’t matter, all that matters is finding a way to be together.

Since we’re planning on all out celebrating Valentines at a later date so we dont have to deal with prix fixe menus and crowds, I’m hoping to spend my night curled up on the couch with candy watching Perks Of Being A Wallflower with my husband. ( Hint, hint: it comes out on the 12th, honey).

Movie Night In

I was curled up on my sofa today watching my favorite movie, The Holiday, which I try and only watch around the Holiday Season because that’s when it’s best. If I watch it in the Summer when it’s not cold, then it just makes me miss cold weather. I don’t actually like being cold, but I love the cold weather clothing. I love it so much that if I could I would actually move to where it were cold all the time, like to England (Surprised are we?).

Since watching my favorite movie got me thinking about cold weather, it also got me thinking about my perfect Movie night in outfit. I actually prefer nights in, particularly in the winter time. I’d much rather stay in and snuggle up on the couch with a cup of tea, and watch it snow outside, than be out driving around in it. I tend prefer to wear leggings and a slouchy sweater when I know I don’t really have anywhere to be in the winter time. That way if I do have to go out I can just throw on jeans over the leggings for added warmth and I’m good to go. So I sat down tonight and decided to pick out my dream movie night in uniform. If I had no budget, this is the outfit I would pick out. Okay I realize the entire outfit is from Jack Wills, but honestly I kinda am really lusting after everything they have in stock right now, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Fashion and Happy Things! Movie Night In
First is the Rothbrook Crew. It’s a little long and a bit slouchy and understated in the branding with Mr. Wills embroidered near the hem. At roughly $79.50 usd it’s really not that bad for a cozy top you’ll wear over and over again.
Then there’s the Bromley Leggings. I adore these they’re $39.50 which is a great price considering they’re fair isle print. Not something I would wear out of the house, except maybe to an ugly sweater party, but I would wear the hell out of them at home. They just look so cozy, and snuggly and honestly this is the one thing that I’m definitely purchasing from this list.
Next are the Rastrick Socks. At $16.50 a pair they’re a bit pricey for socks, but I love socks and these just look so snuggly and warm. I would need to buy them in both colors, because I match my stocks in length and weight, but not actually in color. Having mismatched socks just makes me feel very happy.
Finally I added in the Durston Blanket and the Empson Cushion, which are $148 and $69.50 respectively, because this was a no budget thing and as a general rule I like to have a blanket and cushion when I watch a movie, but I absolutely need them if it’s a spooky movie.

This outfit is definitely at the top of my wishlist, those leggings especially. Do you have a winter night in/movie night/girlie night in uniform? Or maybe a shop whose stock you’re absolutely lusting after? Tell me in the comments.

Emma Watson, Perks of Being a Wallflower

Today has been a lovely day. I slept in, went grocery shopping and I don’t know about you but there’s something about buying fresh organic vegetables and apple cider and Nylon, just because Emma Watson’s on the cover, that makes me insanely happy.

So first thing after putting my groceries away was curl up with my magazine. I have an insane amount of love and respect for Emma Watson, as a person, as an actress and as a fashion icon. I love that she says it took doing a movie like Perks to make her want to act.  I adore that she wants to legitimately act and have substance behind her roles, rather than just be a prop to make the clothes look good in whatever film she’s in. I know that a lot of people judged her because she said she wasn’t sure if this was what she wanted to be doing anymore when she was on the promo tour for the final Potter film, but you do have to think that she was just sort of thrown into this very young and into a film series that was much bigger than I think any of the actors grasped at the time. It’s hard to be that famous that quickly, to not get to screw up all on your own with no one watching your every breath. I respect her that much more because this amazing script landed in her lap, and she made it happen. This story is epic, better yet infinite.

I’ll admit I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’ve read the book. Many times, in fact. Because of that I can say that this isn’t a movie saying no one should bully anyone ever. This isn’t a happy easy teen flick where no one gets their heart broken and everything magic in the end. This is the story that say it’s okay to be different, and shows you how being different works out. Charlie is real, I read a review on the book that said they felt the characters were one dimensional. I couldn’t wrap my head around that, a story book character has never felt more real to me than Charlie. All I could think was the writer of that review was never one of those kids in high school.  The writer of that review somehow either had it easy, or glorified their high school days, I don’t envy them either situation. Every moment of my life has given me a choice and it’s those choices that have made me who I am.

From what I’ve seen of the actors previous work, the film could not have been better cast, and Emma Watson as Sam is the most ingenious move that has ever been made. I don’t think she could have been better cast than if the actual Sam had stepped out of the book. If you’ve seen anything Emma’s ever been in, if you’ve read even a few chapters of the book then you know what I mean, she just fits. Her reluctance to be famous on the level America takes it’s actors too, and factoring in her lack of a normal teen experience, makes her the perfect fit for Sam.

The movie has just recently been released to a wider market and I can’t wait to find out if it’s in a Theater near me. If not I’m willing to travel a hour out of the way to see it. I think I’d feel like I failed if I didn’t see it.
