Fashion and Happy Things! Mary Lambert Heart On My Sleeve

*I participated in the Mary Lambert Heart On My Sleeve album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided a free album to review but all opinions are my own.  .

When I received this album I was insanely excited and it did not disappoint. Not only does Mary Lambert have a beautiful voice, but she’s an amazing lyricist. She covers everything from heartbreak, to being proud of who you are, and new love. The whole album is beautiful but some of the tracks really stuck out to me.

The first track Secrets is definitely my favorite and I can fully see why she made it the single. If you’ve missed it on the radio you can listen to it below.

I can easily picture this on a playlist titled Summer Fun. Like All About That Bass, and Try it promotes loving yourself as you, but it’s more positive overall. It’s insanely catchy and has been stuck in my head since I first heard it, in the best possible way.

The next track that really struck me as something special was Dear One. Putting a poem on a album is something you’d expect from someone like Emilie Autumn or on the other side of the spectrum Tim Minchin. Short, but passionate the emotions in her voice are encompassing. Full of promise, hope and love. While not generally expected, it’s perfect and it’s by far my most played.

Her cover of Jesse’s Girl by Rick Springfield, is stunning. Her voice is absolutely haunted on this track. She truly expresses the pain of unrequited love, making you really feel it, even if you never have. This is something that the more upbeat original version seems to miss out on. A song that makes me think of my childhood, this felt both familiar and fresh at the same time.

The last track that truly struck me as something worth talking about is the title track Heart On My Sleeve. A song for the start of love, it’s pop-y and upbeat. The magic of this song is that it perfectly captures new love, and all the hope we have for it at the beginning. This is something you can dance around your kitchen too, and would fit in flawlessly on that Summer Fun playlist I mentioned earlier.

Those are just my four favorites, the entire album is amazing. Mary Lambert said she set out to create an album that was Catchy, Fun and impacted the world positively, and I’m certain she succeeded. Heart On My Sleeve was inspired by the things that effected Mary Lambert the most, a huge breakup, signed to a major label, learning to be independent and meeting the woman of her dreams.

I think everyone should head to iTunes or Amazon right now an pick up this album. Every track is absolutely amazing.
