Book Review: Dark Visions

fashionandhappythings-0108

L.J. Smith is known for the Vampire Diaries, but she has some other amazing books as well. Dark Visions is one of them. It’s a trilogy which focus on Kaitlyn Fairchild, who has psychic abilities and is believed to be a witch. She’s offered a place at the Zete’s institute along with the other 4 top psychic teenagers in the country. While there she and the other students uncover a plan to use their abilities as a weapon and spend the next two books trying to escape and defeat the head of the Zete’s Institute, Mr. Zetes.

I really loved these books when I read them, they’re YA books and I went through a phase a few years ago where I was obsessed with Supernatural YA books. This is one of the few books I kept from that phase, and one of the even fewer that I’ve made the time to reread.

My Final Verdict: I definitely recommend this for my younger readers. The trilogy is probably just a bit longer than the longest Harry Potter book, but doesn’t drag at any point. It’s a quick and fluid read.

These booties are very recent from Old Navy, they actually still have them. My best friend got these for me as a belated birthday present and I kinda really adore them. Despite the heel they’re really comfortable and I love the way they look.

Book Review: Laura Lamont’s Life In Pictures

Or I know I look like Nancy Drew

fashionandhappythings-9718

The fact that my outfit turned out to look more like Nancy Drew, rather than how Laura Lamont would have looked is purely accidental. Most of my clothing is more 60′s style, where as the beginning of the book is set in the 1920′s and ends in the 1970′s with her being 60 years old.

fashionandhappythings-9736

It starts with Elsa Emerson growing up in her father’s theater the Cherry County Playhouse at age 9, and what happens to Hildy that changes everything for Elsa. From that summer we jump to the summer that Elsa turns 17 and she meets her ticket out of small town Door County, Wisconsin to Hollywood.

After two darling girls and a Divorce, Elsa becomes Laura Lamont and looses herself in acting. She becomes famous, remarries, and adds a son to her family.

The title says it’s Laura Lamont’s Life In Pictures, but it really is less about her acting career and more about her actual life. You follow her from 9 years old to her 60′s. You learn what shapes her, and how she becomes her characters.

I loved this book. It didn’t take me long to read and the story is smooth and light, while still covering some very serious things. I love that it’s set in the 1920′s through the 70′s, though it never really gives an exact year that I recall. It just mentions her ages as things are happening to her. I really recommend this if you’re having a day to yourself and want something easy and light to read. I would say that this is aimed more at women, and while I hate the term, it’s definitely Chick Lit.

Now on to why I look like Nancy Drew. I wanted to put together an outfit for this book that I would still actually wear in my everyday life. Something that Laura Lamont would probably wear in her off time.

Both my peter pan collar top and my pants are from H&M. Bonus you can see Howl Peeping into the shot.

I kept my makeup and hair very simple. All I did with my hair was Blow dry it, and then bobby pin the left side behind my ear.
On My Face: Lancome Tient Vissionaire, Nars Deep Throat, Lancome Brown Eyeliner, Benefit’s Gir Meets Pearl Highlighter, and Lancome Eyeshadows that came in their christmas kit Bare Minerals Lash Domination Mascara and Smiths Rosebud Salve on my lips.

My bracelet was a birthday gift from my husband for my 24th birthday, I adore this bracelet and it represents things that are really important to me. I love that my husband and son went and picked out each charm all on their own.

And my shoes were Penny Loafers that I bought a few years ago from Alloy. I actually bought these the year that the Nancy Drew movie staring Emma Roberts came out. So I’ve had them forever, and they were on sale at the time. The only bad thing is, since I don’t wear them enough, I’ve only just now broken them in.

I loved both this book and this outfit, and I can promise you’ll probably see a few more accidentally Nancy Drew outfits this fall. Or if not Nancy Drew then Gwen Stacy.

Stylish Sundays or Easy Boho

I know Stylish Sundays didn’t happen last week. We got busy and the photos didn’t get edited, but here they are now.
As you know my style is mostly inspired by laziness, this is the absolute end all, beat all, of being lazy.

I’m wearing my slouchy sheer oatmeal tee, VS Pink Peach Bralette, Self-altered Black Maxi Skirt.

I’m kinda completely in love with this skirt,  I didn’t completely make it by hand, which is why I said self-altered. Last year I bought a black maxi dress that ended up being a few inches to short after I washed it. I was pretty annoyed until I remembered this post from LoveMaegan.  It was a elasticated empire waist dress, so I snipped it off and then stitched around the top so it wouldn’t be jagged and I was done. I’ve already worn it 3 different ways, and I promise you will be seeing it again.

My Jewelry is a mint and gold pendent from the now defunct ColourMe.Com, a handmade silver bracelet from Friendship, which is a bi-annual festival near where I live, and my Da Vinci bracelet that was a Birthday Gift from my husband.

For my shoes I wore my Minnetonka Moccasins. I adore these shoes. These were the first shoes I ever bought that cost me more than $20 and I’m so glad I did. I’ve had them for 4 years now and they’ve certainly worn well and have definitely taught me that it pays to invest in certain items. I kinda really want a pair of the ankle boots for fall, and am torn between them and some Chelsea Boots. These are on sale and I’m kinda broken-hearted about it because of the aforementioned spending ban.

Of course, here are the obligatory puppy shots. Howl seems to be getting bigger everyday. I take him every where with me and he loves the car which I am very thankful for.

Howl says “Hi Internets!”
