I finally managed to get him to edit them, so here’s my what I wore for my birthday post.

I don’t know if you’ll remember but I said I wanted to recreate this outfit that Emma Stone wore this year. I knew we were going to have a really laid back day, so I wanted my outfit to be nice but super laid back as well.

fashionandhappythings-0255

I wore this Gap Fitted Boyfriend Shirt in White with Gap Legging Jeans (mine have zips at the ankle) and Toms.

fashionandhappythings-0243

I also wore my Madewell Drifter sunglasses and for my hair I pulled it up in a low messy bun and swept my blunt bangs to the side. I actually really liked them this way and haven’t stopped wearing them that way since. My earrings are my Kate Spade Small Square Studs in Silver

fashionandhappythings-0249

On my face I wore: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation in Siberia, Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Vanilla, Nars Blush in Deep Throat, Lancome Eyeshadow in Metallic Taupe, Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Bourbon, Benefit Watts Up Highlighter, Benefit They’re Real Mascara, YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in #9 Cool Guava and Makeup Forever HD setting powder.

fashionandhappythings-0247

I was completely in love with this outfit. It was absolutely perfect for the day, and I managed (with the help of an apron) to keep my white shirt white during meal times which is an amazing feat for me because I’m insanely klutzy.

fashionandhappythings-0240

Howl thinks he’s a Vampire now and wants to know why he doesn’t sparkle! I keep telling him only Faeries sparkle.

I’ll be doing a post on what my husband and son got me for my birthday very very soon so be on the look out for that.

Madewell Drifter Sunglasses http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/09/madewell-drifter-sunglasses/ http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/09/madewell-drifter-sunglasses/#comments Thu, 12 Sep 2013 18:48:27 +0000 mana http://fashionandhappythings.com/?p=1539 I know I never review clothing items, and that these were meant to be shown in a Haul, and then probably never mentioned again, but I just couldn’t do that. I adore these glasses and decided they needed their own post all to themselves.

fashionandhappythings-9985

Because I’m excessively clumsy I never really like to pay more than $5 for sunglasses. I know that I will inevitably break them or loose them. But I fell in love with Emma Stone’s Rag and Bone Monroe glasses, and knew there was no way I’d pay that much for them, so I began searching for a suitable copy. I found them at Madewell. Then I waited impatiently for them to go on sale because they were $50. And that seems like a lot of money to spend on something you’ve only ever paid $5 at H&M for in the past.

I adore Madewell, they are the kind of place where I only buy stuff when its on sale, because when they have sales they’re amazing. Seriously, like 30% to 50% off of already reduced merchandise kind of sales. Which was the case with these glasses. I only paid $29.50 for them, which is $20 off the original price. And they came with a cloth case that I kinda adore.

fashionandhappythings-9984

Since when they aren’t on my face they live in my purse, I don’t really have to worry about them being crushed because I have lots of compartments in my purse,so nothing is disorganized.

I’ve only had these a bit over a week and I’ve already worn them in two posts.

Last weeks Stylish Sundays: Spiked Rose Gold

fashionandhappythings-0002

And yesterdays Book Review: Things We Didn’t Say

fashionandhappythings-0036

And I can promise you will be seeing them again and again. Because I’m absolutely in love with these. The fit well, don’t give me a headache, which is common with glasses. The lenses aren’t completely black, they’re more of a grey, which is perfect for me because I wear them when I drive, and since they aren’t to dark I can wear them when the sun is setting without feeling like I can’t see. Plus I adore tortoiseshell.

If you decide that you want them, you’re in luck, because they’re still on sale here, and they have them in 3 colors.

Bonus note: Howl Totally approves

Book Review: Things We Didn’t Say http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/09/book-review-things-we-didnt-say/ http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/09/book-review-things-we-didnt-say/#comments Wed, 11 Sep 2013 09:00:12 +0000 mana http://fashionandhappythings.com/?p=1531 fashionandhappythings-0049

I originally read this book over a year ago, and recently picked it up for a thumb through when I was sick. I forgot how much I liked it. Things We Didn’t Say by Kristina Riggle is a really moving story, told from several points of view over a period of 48 hours.

Stepping into a ready made family is never easy, and on the morning the Casey’s secrets are driving her out, Dylan her soon to be stepson disappears after being dropped of at school. In the ensuing terror and upset as the family searches for Dylan, Casey’s secrets, among others come out, changing everything.

This story was written really well. Everyone’s back story while perhaps a bit traditional, since you  have the new Fiance, the Father, the bratty teens, the overlooked middle child, the brainy youngest, and the Batcrap Crazy ex-wife, it’s all still really well written out. The people don’t feel flat or one dimensional. Casey seems to be the only one who keeps her head in all of this mess, everyone else either goes off the deep end with worry, or in the case of the ex-wife is incredibly self absorbed and thriving on the Drama.

For me this story was a bit out of my comfort zone. The family dynamic type stories aren’t ones I usually read. In truth, I usually read either flippy little murder mysteries, supernatural type books, or dark and twisted books. This book felt more like a messed up sitcom to me than any of those. But I did enjoy it.

Final Verdict, I recommend it. While it’s not a light read by any means, it’s still a really good one. I know I didn’t go into much detail, but it’s the secrets in this books that make it so interesting.

The outfit I’m wearing was inspired by Nina of after the 40 bar finish. I really loved the outfit when I saw her wear it, and remembered it instantly when I saw my floral pants sitting on the chair in my room waiting to be put away.

fashionandhappythings-0043

I’m wearing a Feed For Target Chambray, Floral Pants from H&M (last seen here) and Sam Edelman Calypso Flats in Black.

fashionandhappythings-0045

I paired it with my Lover’s Locket from Jewelmint, which has been one of my favorites for this season so far, and been pretty much just alternating with my Pen Necklace.

fashionandhappythings-0040

Close up of the Sam Edelman’s. These are definitely one of my favorite pairs of shoes and well worth every dime.

fashionandhappythings-0036

I also wore my Madewell Drifter sunglasses and had a pink Emi-Jay hairtie for pulling back my hair while driving.

fashionandhappythings-0038

On my face was Lancome’s Tient Vissionaire Foundation and Concealer,  Nars Deep Throat, YSL Babydoll Mascara, NYX Skinny Eye Marker Eyeliner, and whatever random lip gloss I grabbed out of my purse first.

I felt surprisingly comfortable in this outfit, even though tucked in shirts are way out of my comfort zone. Have you worn anything out of your comfort zone lately and then ended up feeling like you were pulling it off.

Another I Love Fall Post http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/09/1517/ http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/09/1517/#comments Tue, 10 Sep 2013 09:00:16 +0000 mana http://fashionandhappythings.com/?p=1517 Something happens to me come fall, I find myself every year wanting to completely overhaul my closet, and instead of the mish-mash that it is, just change it over to full on preppy. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, considering my favorite designer is Kate Spade, and I’m completely in love with Keil James Patrick’s Line as well. Plus how much I nerd out over bookshops, Library’s, old buildings and Coffee shops, and well I guess it’s only obvious.

This look is my absolute dream look for hanging around in an old library, learning strange things that no one ever really needs to know.

Fall Library

The basics of this outfit are the Madewell Penfield Stokes Checked Shirt, H&M Cable Knit Sweater and H&M Skinny Jeans. Of course it had to feature H&M they are my favorite place to shop. I’d wear this Kate Spade Apple Of My Eye Mini Pendent, because Apples have a two fold symbolism come fall. Then I’d add in this red and white striped Vickers Bow from Kiel James Patrick. I, like Becky, adore these bows. The story behind them is they’re based off of men’s bow ties, and turned into bracelets for women. I have had these on my wishlist for ever and can’t wait to own one someday, hopefully very soon. Then for shoes I chose these Kate Spade x Keds in Frame Dot Pink. They’re bright and colorful, and I adore the mix of red and pink together. I know some people think they clash, but I’ve always adored it. I adore the just in from the cold flushed look, and Exhibit A from Nars will give you exactly that. I know red blush looks scary, but it’s all in how you apply it. Then of course I had to chose a red polish, and this one from Illamasqua is just gorgeous.

Another one of my favorite fall activities is apple picking, and with just a few changes this outfit is still pretty perfect for that.

Fall Orchard

I’d change into some Hunter boots, to prevent the possibility of ruining those adorable Kate Spade x Keds, toss on this adorable Boat Jacket by Superdry, and I’m all set for the outside. This Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Shopper is perfect for carrying all the apples I pick, and this Loose Leaf Tumbler from Teavana is an absolute necessity for keeping warm in the cold

These photos are actually the photos I was going to put up last weekend, but for several reasons they didn’t go up. This outfit was super basic because I was going shopping and getting my fringe (Bangs! I know bangs, but I prefer fringe, because bangs makes me think of Ricky Martin) cut that day. I’ve really been loving the basic outfits lately.

Those Sunnies are a sneak peek for a Haul that’s coming sometime next week. I actually bought them the day before. I love them because they sort of remind me of the the 50′s, and they’re the ones that I put in my Birthday wishlist. I decided to buy them for myself. The day I took the photos, I didn’t find anything. Which was a bit of a bummer, but C’est La Vie.

Have you purchased anything you just couldn’t wait to wear lately?

My Birthday Is Coming http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/08/my-birthday-is-coming/ http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/08/my-birthday-is-coming/#comments Fri, 16 Aug 2013 17:25:47 +0000 mana http://fashionandhappythings.com/?p=1338 Or Buy Me Something!

My Birthday is less than 2 months away, and it is seriously my favorite time of the year. Since it’s my favorite, I’m already planning what I want to do. We never really do anything to big for my birthday, it’s always dinner out with just the family and presents. I’m gonna be completely honest, presents are my favorite part. Since I’ve been sick all week, I’ve been laying on the couch making these on Polyvore. Most of them I haven’t published, but I liked these two enough to share.

I’ve already got my outfit picked out, and of course I don’t actually have any of this stuff. It’s inspired by Emma Stone, because she’s my latest style obsession.

Birthday Outfit

It’s the absolute perfect casual easy going outfit. Classic, Chic and Comfortable, and it’s all things I should have in my wardrobe and don’t. Which since it’s all classic pieces it gives me the perfect excuse to buy them. First up is this Gap Boyfriend Oxford Shirt, I have been meaning to buy a white button down forever, but keep putting it off. Then are these jeans from H&M, these look absolutely perfect and comfortable. I think the best part is that they’re midrise and dark wash with no rips or tears in them. Then there’s Tom’s. I’ve never really been a big fan of how the shoes look, but they’ve started to grow on me, bonus they’re one of those buy and do good things. I actually plan on buying myself a pair for my birthday. Then the accessories for the outfit, I’m kinda in love with all of them.  There are these Ampersand Earrings from Kate Spade, this Monogram S necklace from Nadri, these amazing Drifter Sunnies from Madewell and my absolute favorite this Twelfth St. By Cynthia Vincent Shopper. I adore this bag. I’m not really one for handbags, but this one is gorgeous.

Continuing with the theme of My Birthday Is Coming Soon(ish), I’ve also put together a wishlist collage.

Birthday wishlist

It’s not a very long list this year, but I adore each and everyone of these items on my list. You’ll notice that the accessories that were in my outfit post above are all on this wishlist. I’ll start with the Jewelry, There’s the Say Yes Ampersand Earrings from Kate Spade, the Monogram S necklace from Nadri and also this Monogram bracelet from Alex and Ani. I’d also really like a nice pair of Sunglasses and while I’d love a pair from Warby Parker, I think they’re a bit expensive for this year, so these Drifter Suglasses from Madewell in tortoiseshell  are a great alternative. Then I really love this iPhone Case from Lilly Pulitzer, and this brush set from Real Techniques. A Barnes and Noble Gift Card is always welcome. I am of course a shoe addict and since I’ve worn out my Floral H&M shoes, I was thinking it’s time to graduate to Keds. I really love these Kate Spade for Keds, but then again these Paw Print Taylor Swift for Keds have had a special place in my heart ever since we brought Howl home. We have a tie for my most wanted item this year, and that’s between a Keurig and the Twelfth St. Shopper by Cynthia Vincent. I adore both of them and would be absolutely ecstatic with either one.

fashionandhappythings-7175

This book falls into the Dystopian Genre, which like everyone else I’m a huge fan of. It’s also a Romance as many of the Dystopian books are. It’s told from the point of view of a Carer who is soon to become a Doner, the Donor’s that she cares for and how they grew up, and got where they are now. It’s set in the 90′s. I found this book a bit hard to follow and I often didn’t quite understand what was going on due to the terms used and the frankness with which they’re presented until much later in the book. Even when I didn’t understand what was happening, I was very attached to the characters. I do think that this book is meant to be confusing because even the characters don’t fully understand what is happening and why. Right from the beginning, even though I didn’t know quite what was going on because of the strange terms used, I felt like something ominous was looming over the whole story. When she’s reminiscing about growing up, you start to understand that there is something really sinister going on and that none of these are normal children. When you find out what their future holds and that they never really question their fate, except in passing what ifs, it’s really quite surprising. Or at least it was for me anyway. I get very attached to characters, so it was a bit hard for me to swallow what these children are being raised to do. By the time you find out though, they aren’t children anymore. It’s hinted at, throughout the childhood parts, but it’s not til they’re adults that you find out for certain what’s going on.

I really recommend that you read this book. It makes you think. To decide what your ethics and morals are.

Honestly I bought this book because FleurDeForce showed it in one of her Packing Videos and I thought it looked interesting. I really didn’t think I was going to love this book as much as I did, or that I was going to reread it as many times as I have. I’m pretty sure that I only paid about $5 for it on Amazon with Prime shipping. If I’d have known how much I was going to adore this book I probably would have bought it hard cover.

This outfit kinda really has nothing to do with this book, but at the same time I feel like it’s something that main character might have worn when she was my age.  I actually wore this outfit when I met Sarahbelle93 on Sunday. (I’ll stop talking about that soon, I promise, but right now I’m still crazy excited about it!)

I’m wearing a Madewell Cardigan, H&M Tank with another Tank from The Limited underneath it, and Gap Jeggings with Ankle Zips.

fashionandhappythings-9803

My Shoes are from Sam Edelman and they’re the Calypso Flats with Gold Studs

fashionandhappythings-9805

And my necklace is my Gold Pen Necklace that Miss Cannady gave me for my birthday last year. I told you guys I was obsessed. It’s just perfect.

fashionandhappythings-9804

For my hair I just wore it down and my Makeup is my current usual: Lancome Tient Vissionaire in 100, Nars Concealer in Vanilla, Nars Blush in Deep Throat, Benefit Sunbeam, Benefit Bad Gal Lash and YSL #4 Succulent Pomegranate.

fashionandhappythings-9808

Also of course we can’t have an outfit post without Howl being adorable. It just comes naturally to him.

fashionandhappythings-9807

He’s starting to get really fluffy again, which I’m excited about because when we got him groomed we went much shorter than we intended too, and I was kinda heartbroken about it.

First do you like the way I’ve changed my titles? Making the Or a subtitle rather than part of the main title. Do you like it or should I go back to the way I was doing it before?

Secondly this outfit is what I wore to my Sister-In-Law/Bestie/Sister/One third of the best group of friends that ever existed T’s house when she and her man C grilled out and had some super dangerous fireworks. Seriously, the phrase “At least no one got burned this year” was uttered several times. I’m teasing, it was a beautiful show and I’m looking forward to next year.

I wore:

fashionandhappythings-9527 fashionandhappythings-9532
Boyfriend Button down from Madewell tied in a knot at the last button, GAP Skimmer Jeans in yellow Polka Dot and Blue Leather Ballet Flats also from GAP.

fashionandhappythings-9518
My Hair is tossed up in the laziest messy bun I’ve ever done with my bangs pinned back. I was having a very rare bad hair day.
On My Face: Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, Nars Concealer, Nars Deep Throat, Benefit Girl Meets Pearl, Chanel Mascara Sample, YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in #4 Succulent Pomegranate.

fashionandhappythings-9523 fashionandhappythings-9524fashionandhappythings-9522
Close up of the accessories; H&M Necklace worn as a bracelet, ColourMe.com necklace with the chain shortened using a safety pin and a close up of my shoes, which I absolutely adore.

I was actually really surprised by this outfit, it’s much more colorful than I would normally wear. Usually I’d just do one statement piece in an outfit and that would be it, but I recently saw this post by Hanna Lei who is a blogger I’m absolutely obsessed with right now, and was inspired by her pairing of printed colored jeans with a graphic tee. Obviously the two outfits are very different, but that just shows you can take inspiration from anywhere.

It was really comfortable to wear and I felt great in it. It helped that this shirt is one of my husbands favorite shirts on me. He likes it enough that he remembers where we bought it, and if I say I don’t know what to wear his answer is immediately wear that Madewell shirt. He’s also the one that picked it out. I don’t know if he just randomly spotted it, or if was bored and flipping through the racks, but I’m really happy he found it, because it was on sale, during one of their extra percent off of sale items sales and I think we only paid $6 for it. The jeans were really comfortable, but the best part was the shoes. They were comfortable right from the first wear, no breaking in time which is amazing.

Bonus Note: I’m doing the 30 day ab challenge with Amanda of Living In Another Language

Festival Fashion or How To Survive The Heat http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/06/festival-fashion-or-how-to-survive-the-heat/ http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/06/festival-fashion-or-how-to-survive-the-heat/#comments Fri, 28 Jun 2013 17:57:00 +0000 mana http://new.fashionandhappythings.com/2013/06/festival-fashion-or-how-to-survive-the-heat/

It’s festival season right now, and everything from Pride (this weekend in most large cities) to Music Festivals and Summer Fairs are happening. Personally I’m going to a Pride celebration this weekend, and this is pretty close to what I plan on wearing. There are obviously going to be a few changes but you’ll see those in the up coming pictures.

Festival Fashion
First I really recommend a light tank top, this one from Madewell would work perfectly, I have it in Navy and I adore it. Then I recommend some cutoffs, these from PacSun are pretty damn cute, plus bright colors are always a win. Then for shoes I recommend Converse, the more beat up the better so you don’t have to worry about them being ruined. Alternatively Hunter boots are also a really good choice, especially if you’ll be somewhere muddy. The Jewelry pictured is from H&M so no links there since you can’t online shop in the states, but I do recommend hitting up your local H&M or F21 for some cheap and cheerful jewelry. The Bag is from Olsenboye, and is actually the bag I’ll be carrying, but I bought it a few years ago. This one is very similar though.
Speaking of bags, I thought I’d show you really quick what will be in mine.

What's In My Festival Bag

Smart Water, it’s stupidly expensive for water, but I am obsessed. I’ll be picking up some bottles the day of. Kate Somerville Protect SPF 55 Serum Sunscreen for my face, Alba Botanica Sunscreen for my body or I’ll be cooked, Smith’s Rosebud Salve Tube, it’s necessary trust me. Hand Sanitizer, because do I need to explain public bathrooms to you? Emi-Jay Hair Ties, I adore these and must always have an extra, and snacks.
Are you or Have you attended any Festivals or events this summer? I know my outfit is pretty tame, but it’s merely a base to build off of.

Spring is here but I’d rather be in Paris or Parisian Chic http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/05/spring-is-here-but-id-rather-be-in-paris-or-parisian-chic/ http://fashionandhappythings.com/2013/05/spring-is-here-but-id-rather-be-in-paris-or-parisian-chic/#comments Fri, 17 May 2013 20:46:00 +0000 mana http://new.fashionandhappythings.com/2013/05/spring-is-here-but-id-rather-be-in-paris-or-parisian-chic/ I’ve been spending a lot of time watching HGTV and I’m absolutely obsessed with the Paris Episodes of House Hunters. I’ve never been really interested in even being in Paris until recently despite the fact that I took french in elementary school. Looking at the city and the houses has made me absolutely desperate to be in France. I’ve always loved Versailles, but now I want to see all of France and would love to be able to just take off and spend a summer, or if I’m really honest at least a year touring the whole country.

Since I’m unable to do that, I’m instead imaging what I would wear if I were able to just up and go to France for a year. Today I’m sort of focusing on the touristy type outfits I’d wear. What I’d wear to explore the markets and spend time in the parks. Maybe learn to ride a bike. Actually I can ride a bike, so long as it has training wheels or 3 wheels, I have no balance.

So lets look at what I’d wear to be a tourist in France in the Summer

Easy Spring
This outfit is definitely my Market Exploring outfit. I love that this outfit mixes both patterns and textures and even though it all comes from American retailers I still feel like this outfit is very Parisian. The Lace Blossom Tee from Madewell is the perfect starting point for this outfit. It’s plain white but it has texture because it’s lace. I’m completely in love with with these Demin Cutoff Shorts in Graphic Grid. I love Madewell Denim and the pattern of these is almost sort of a non pattern. It’s the kind of pattern you could easily mix with another pattern and it wouldn’t look gaudy or like you’re trying to hard to be trendy. This Embroidered Scarf from J.Crew is gorgeous and perfect for traveling in France because it’s light enough to layer in the warm weather and just adds the perfect finishing touch. Plus Scarves are very Parisian and you don’t want to stick out when you’re a tourist in another country. The Leather Ballet Flats from Gap are perfect for all the walking you’ll be doing and of course you’ll need the Picnic Floral Delacorte watch from Kate Spade so you’re not late for lunch. My favorite part of this outfit, the finishing touch on this outfit really is this Call To Action Play The Field bag from Kate Spade. It’s absolutely perfect for all the shopping you’ll be doing in the open air  The accessories of this outfit could easily work into several other outfits which is key when you’re packing for traveling.

This second outfit is perfect for riding bikes, visiting the Eiffel Tower, and exploring the parks.
fresh
Stripes are classically Parisian so this Striped Harbor Sweater from Madewell is a must, it’s loose and comfortable while still being insanely fashionable. I paired it with the 3″ Chino Shorts in Chrome Green from J.Crew. Add in some Keds for ease of peddling or walking. You could easily switch these out for Converse or Superga’s. Add in the Picnic Floral watch you wore with your last outfit, some Skinny Mini Bow Studs and this Neon Pink Turnlock Charm Leather Bracelet from Marc By Marc Jacobs and you’ve got the perfect accessories. Then since you’ll be out sightseeing all day I added in these Winston Sunglasses from Warby Parker which is an amazing company that donates a pair of glasses for every pair you buy. I’m just a bit obsessed right now and am saving all my pennies hopefully in order to buy myself a pair for my birthday this October.  I added in this fragrance from Caudalié. I adore Caudalié and being that they’re a french skincare company, this nice light fragrance would be perfect for your stay in France.

Just a bit of a side note here, you guys will be seeing a lot of Caudalié products here very soon in the form of a Haul. Probably early next week.
